EOC Survey Research Week 2

The research survey that I have found was titled “How Kids React When Parents Go Social.” The survey was originated by a company called eMarketer. eMarketer is a service helps companies find unbiased research and trend analysis on any digital marketing and media. They have estimated that 74.9% of teens were regular social media users by the end of 2009; which has soon risen to 78.2% in 2010. Adults have recently been the reasoning behind the growth of such social media sites like Facebook in the years 2009 and 2010.

According to a survey taken by the social site myYearbook, how the younger generations perceived adult usage of such sites was depending on their age. Most of the younger teenagers felt “nervous” or hated the fact that their parents were using the same network as them, but as the age groups got older and matured a little more the percentage was only at 27%. For the most part however, some teenagers liked having their parent as a “friend” because they felt more comfortable and open with them rather than always having to hide.

Knowing that myYearbook is more of a teen-orientated site, I feel that the survey results maybe a little more biased than intended. Facebook and Twitter are more targeted towards the college level students as oppose to the early tweens. Another survey was conducted by Kaplan Inc. where they have found in their results that once a child and the parents are on the same social sites, they are actually willing to open up and give them full access to their world. There are still kids out there that still decide to block their parent out, which isn’t going to change by any means until they have matured, if that.

I’ve actually found that being friends with my parents on Facebook has actually brought us a little closer which isn’t a surprise in this day and age. My parents have never chastised me or become any more or less strict on me because what was and is on my page. If a teenager is going to be nervous about what their parents see on their page, then it shouldn’t be there in the first place.
