Final Project Analyzation

If Victoria’s Secret were to be continuous with their available sizes,

sales would increase.

For our marketing research project, we had to embark upon this survey to assist the local Victoria’s Secret to increase sales. One of the problems that Victoria’s Secret encounters on a day-to-day basis and is often scrutinized about is there available sizes carried in stores. Either they don’t offer big enough sizes or their smaller sizes run too big. They do carry a wide array of sizes currently with 38DD being the largest bra size and XL being the largest underwear size, (only in one style).

Every now and then the company will decide to carry a select variation of size 40’s and double-d sizes. It was just recently that they decided to discontinue the DD’s in the push up selections. Being that push-up bras are the number one seller in the company, it is hard for customers to find a bra that fits them correctly. With Victoria’s Secret they do recommend that you can try your “sister size.” A sister size is like a complimentary size that usually fits about the same as your true size.

For example, if you are a 32DD you could go up in your band size to a 34 and down in your cup size to a single D. The cup will fit just the same as a DD but the band may possibly be a little looser causing you to move the hook to either the middle or last notch. However, if you were a 40D you would go down in your band size to a 38, and up in your cup to a DD. For the most part, sister sizing ends up working out but if you are a true 32 or 40 it will either be too big around or too tight.

The company does offer an in-store credit card that offers them great deals and benefits, even for online purchases, but not all of the customers would like a credit card in their name. As for their clothing that they carry, it runs from XS to L which depending on the fit, does very well in sales. The PINK collection does have various fits in their sweat pants where a large could fit an extra-large but that doesn’t go for all of the styles.

Having to recommend that the customer go shop online because the sizes that we don’t carry in stores are usually online, is not what we would want for our own personal store goals, but it is what we do for the customers own personal benefit. It is very frustrating for them to come in and find out that their size was either discontinued or only offered online, so that is why instead of bringing in the rare sizes and then having them discontinued out not long after, myself and the 50 customers/associates that I surveyed believe that if they were to be continuous with their size offerings the stores sales would greatly increase.

EOC WEEK 9 NETWORK

The film "Network" is about a television anchor that with age has lost his strong ratings he had once had. Upon finding out he was fired, Howard Beale had an outburst during a live taping of his segment. He made a statement that the following day he would shoot himself on television. With that statement controversy soon followed.

When the next day had come he had made this statement, “Good evening. Today is Wednesday, September the 24th, and this is my last broadcast. Yesterday I announced on this program that I was going to commit public suicide, admittedly an act of madness. Well, I'll tell you what happened: I just ran out of bullshit. Am I still on the air? I really don't know any other way to say it other than I just ran out of bullshit. Bullshit is all the reasons we give for living. And if we can't think up any reasons of our own, we always have the God bullshit. We don't know why we're going through all this pointless pain, humiliation, decays, so there better be someone somewhere who does know. That's the God bullshit. And then, there's the noble man bullshit; that man is a noble creature that can order his own world; who needs God? Well, if there's anybody out there that can look around this demented slaughterhouse of a world we live in and tell me that man is a noble creature, believe me: That man is full of bullshit. I don't have anything going for me. I haven't got any kids. And I was married for thirty-three years of shrill, shrieking fraud. So I don't have any bullshit left. I just ran out of it, you see.” “I want you to go to the window, open it, stick your head out and yell: "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore."

With this, Faye Dunaways character that is obsessed with ratings comes up with the idea of giving Howard Beale his own television show. She knew that it would instantly become a great success because of all the market research that she conducted. It was the first show of its kind and because of how controversial he was it had a huge following. Just by seeing how everyone in the streets would come out and yell “I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take this anymore” you could tell that if he was a great success just by one segment on the news, he would be just as successful on his own.

So he then gets a show where he can say whatever the hell he wants. Unfortunately for the network, he exposes the ties between the corporation that owns the network, and business interests in Saudi Arabia. Arthur Jensen, explains to him his belief that money is the only true god, where Howard Beale completely turns his message around. Before, he told people their lives had value and meaning, but after his meeting with Jensen, he says the opposite. His ratings soon drop, but Jensen orders him kept on; network executives order him to be assassinated. The film then ends with the murder of Howard Beale on national television.

BOC - Week 9 Nielsen Ratings

Hundreds of channels, thousands of programs, millions of viewers. Our job is to decipher and deliver television data every day. How does a program achieve # 1 rank in Nielsen TV Ratings, and what does this mean? Our ratings aren’t qualitative evaluations of how much a program is “liked.” Instead, our ratings provide the simplest, most democratic measurement: How many people watched.
When Arthur Nielsen introduced the Audimeter (his first metering device) in 1936, there were only about 200 television sets in use worldwide. When the Nielsen national TV measuring service was established in 1950, the average American household that owned a television had only one set and received three network telecasts. Nielsen measures over 40% of the world’s TV viewing behavior

Today, the typical home has multiple television sets and well over 100 channels from which to choose. Likewise, our measurement technologies must constantly evolve to keep pace with daily innovations in consumer electronics.

With recent advances in electronics, viewing is no longer limited to the television set and content is available on multiple platforms. Computers and mobile devices have joined the television as places to view programming. Nielsen measures how people use and engage with content across these “three screens.”

EOC Week 8

In order to get the best experience of designer denim one cannot wash it in the washing machine with hot water and tons of soap and then throw them in the dryer, it would completely ruin them. The denim will no longer fit, it will be worn, and become too soft too quickly. It would seem that since the best thing about an amazing pair of denim is that they fit the wearer perfectly and the entire concept of the wash looses this aspect because the denim becomes distorted. Perhaps the best way to wash denim is by hand. Preferably in water that isn’t too hot and with a small amount of soap/detergent, following with an air drying process where the denim is lied flat on a surface. This way it allows for the denim to be ‘freshened up’ without having to withstand the tough washing environment which will ruin them. I feel as though somewhere I also once read that as odd as it may seem, wearing ones denim into the shower to wet them, washing them gently with detergent and then following with the air drying is the best process. This way when the denim is wet it can mold to the wearers body and then in the air drying process the shape will not become too far distorted because they are not being tossed about in a heat filled tumbling machine. Preferably this process would be done as little as possible, because truly how dirty does our denim get, perhaps a minor stain every now and then, but mostly they are worn for a day in which we did no strenuous activity and then taken off. I think that the best timing then would be to possibly do this about twice a year, so every six months. After all, designer denim is expensive, and we want it to last for quite a long time and have them possibly evolve into our favorite pair ever.

EOC Week 6 - Tax Cuts

The EOC for this week is in the course shell. Called tax cuts. I expect everyone to have it done for this class - even if you were at Magic. Read the article. What is the flow in the question that will distort the answer? Develop a 300-word blog post that supports your view. You will need to research the actual content of the tax cuts enacted in 2001 and 2003.

I think that one way or another that tax cuts are going to screw someone. You cant make one decision without hurting someone or something. Of course people are going to say, “Hell Yeah! Go tax cuts!” but they aren't going to realize what the re-precautions are going to be. Everyone is going to choose the the route that benefits THEM and not really care for the consequences of anyone else

EOC Week 5 My Poll

My poll is about “Who do you think is the next trend setter?” There are always going to be fashion icons that will never fade out, but everyday we see new young stars coming out in the hottest fashions. Since you don’t really know who they are or what it is that they do for a living, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re not fashion forward. Madonna, Britney, Lady Gaga, Rihanna. We all know who they are, what they wear, who they wear, but the world of fashion does not revolve around them.

That is why for my selection of answers I chose young starlets who are on the cutting edge of fashion, so it takes time and actual consideration when you take my poll instead of choosing the name you like the best.

BOC Week 5: Mens hairstyles

Bald: Some well known celebrities have gone the route of just shaving it all off, and have found that it worked for them. A good example of this would be Bruce Willis. He is a good looking bald man and I wouldn’t prefer it any other way.
360 Waves: 360 waves are popular amongst African American men. The style is named for the natural pattern of tight waves and ridges that form a 360 pattern.
Bowl Cuts: Bowl cuts are hairstyles that originated from placing a bowl on top of a young man’s head and then cutting the hair that falls beneath the edge. It became more popularized during The Great Depression when a young man’s hair needed to be cut since there was no money to be spent on haircuts.
Dreadlocks: This style is also known as having dreads. It consists of matted and knotted strands of hair. Dreadlocks can be a controversial hairstyle due to the fact that they are associated with Rastafarian and African culture. It became popular amongst many rock stars.
Spikes – When the hair is worn in a series of spikes that can either be short or long. Spikes are different than a Mohawk because it extends down the center of the head.

EOC Week 4 "Big"

In the film “Big” starring Tom Hanks, the CEO of the company was doing market research in the FAO Schwartz toy store. Tom Hanks was a 13 year old boy who all of a sudden became a 30 year old man working at the MacMillan Toy Company. He originally applied to simply just get a job. Even while in the lobby filling out his application he was doing research on the guy sitting next to him in order to fill out the application the correct way. On the weekend he went to the FAO Schwartz to play around with all of the new toys with other children, when his boss runs into him. He then walked around with him around the store asking his perspective on the toys and he did then understand why some of the toys were not selling all too well. By his personal testimony on why the toys are successful and had questions on why certain things were altered, it landed him the better job. After his promotion he then had the best job in the world of just playing with toys all day and either asking why they even created or telling them how cool they were. Without him being a recent teenager I don’t think he would have been as successful at his job as he was then. Some adults feel as if they have never grown up, but you have to be in a serious mindset of the child to go into the deeper market research of the toy in order for it to be successful. Without the serious market research and all of the personal testimonies of real children the toy won’t be as successful. A good example of this is when the CEO asked him what he thought of the hockey game, and he said it was a good game just not as good as the original, and told him exactly why it wasn’t. Maybe even playing with the toys themselves will help them get a better idea on how to make it even more successful.

BOC Week 4 BeautifulStranger.tv

The website BeautifulStranger.tv is a very resourceful website that allows retailers, buyers, forecasters, just about anyone in the fashion industry the ability to see what the latest trends are on the streets. They stop in the hippest cities to find trendsetters, and ask them right then and there what their secret is to being so stylish. Not all of the latest trends come from the runway, that’s just where they are mostly seen and noted. Street fashion is on the rise and is being looked at more and more every single day. The average fashionista isn’t going to be able to afford a off the runway Chanel dress, so they go to whatever store that’s chic and yet affordable to still be on the cutting edge of the latest trends.

They also have video profiles of designers, stylists, directors, and actors; just about anyone who is interested in the fashion industry. The website is a unique and genius ideas to those out there who want to be super chic but doesn’t have the funds to afford it. One of the girls featured is wearing an H&M top, and paired it with Converse shoes and a cute Michael Kors bag. Given Michael Kors isn’t necessarily affordable luxury to most people, but you don’t need to spend a couple of car payments to have a cute purse. That’s what stores like H&M and Forever 21 are for, and why they are so successful.

BeautifulStranger.tv is another route to being on top of the latest trends and fashions without you necessarily breaking your bank. You can look to your fellow peers and even strangers to get an idea of the next outfit you want to try, without trying to hard to look like a celebrity. You can be super stylish with being super broke.

EOC Week 3 : 9 to 5

For the movie “9 to 5” the marketing research that they had done was more than what I would have expected. They actually did a focus group of real women who were secretaries, and what is funny about the whole thing is that none of whom was involved with the film had any REAL office experience. I have never personally seen the movie but what I caught during the documentary was that there were some serious ethical issues that were portrayed throughout the movie.

Some of the issues were that there were three secretaries who worked for a slim ball boss. The movie is a very feminist movie that deals with how women of this time dealt with the unethical issues of the workplace. Dolly Parton’s character deals with sexual harassment from the boss even though she clearly states that she is a married woman, and he makes it noted that he too is married but just doesn’t care at all. Lily Tomlin is the woman of the office who gets treated poorly even though she was one of the top employees and has been with the company forever. He passes her up on promotions and makes her get him coffee at every waking chance, it’s a very unhealthy environment for a woman of her stature and experience to be working in.

Lastly there’s Jane Fonda’s character; she is the newest addition to the office and is the most naïve. These three women came together and managed to trap him in his own home. After doing so they then took over his department while he was still trapped, and saw that productivity has increased in his absence. They keep him tied up in hopes that he will forget the incident ever happened and begins to cooperate.

EOC Survey Research Week 2

The research survey that I have found was titled “How Kids React When Parents Go Social.” The survey was originated by a company called eMarketer. eMarketer is a service helps companies find unbiased research and trend analysis on any digital marketing and media. They have estimated that 74.9% of teens were regular social media users by the end of 2009; which has soon risen to 78.2% in 2010. Adults have recently been the reasoning behind the growth of such social media sites like Facebook in the years 2009 and 2010.

According to a survey taken by the social site myYearbook, how the younger generations perceived adult usage of such sites was depending on their age. Most of the younger teenagers felt “nervous” or hated the fact that their parents were using the same network as them, but as the age groups got older and matured a little more the percentage was only at 27%. For the most part however, some teenagers liked having their parent as a “friend” because they felt more comfortable and open with them rather than always having to hide.

Knowing that myYearbook is more of a teen-orientated site, I feel that the survey results maybe a little more biased than intended. Facebook and Twitter are more targeted towards the college level students as oppose to the early tweens. Another survey was conducted by Kaplan Inc. where they have found in their results that once a child and the parents are on the same social sites, they are actually willing to open up and give them full access to their world. There are still kids out there that still decide to block their parent out, which isn’t going to change by any means until they have matured, if that.

I’ve actually found that being friends with my parents on Facebook has actually brought us a little closer which isn’t a surprise in this day and age. My parents have never chastised me or become any more or less strict on me because what was and is on my page. If a teenager is going to be nervous about what their parents see on their page, then it shouldn’t be there in the first place.

"How Kids React When Parents Go Social"

Week 2 BOC Quiz

1. What is a booty pop, and what is its significance?

A booty pop is a pair of underwear that has two pads sewn into the back part to give women a little bit more junk in the trunk. I think the only real significance is that curves are back, and skinny is out. There is more to it than just woman having more oomph, its giving them a little bit more confidence that they had initially.

2. Who spends more online, men or women? Proportion? (%, $)

Women spend more online because they are easily distracted. It’s like when a woman goes inside the store to purchase milk, but comes out with everything else BUT the milk. She could have intentions on buying a new throw pillow but then purchase new drapery, table lamps, somehow a new toaster oven and a pair of shoes to top it off. When men shop they are more focused and know exactly what it is that they want. The online shopping industry is a $15 billion industry, due to women spending well over 9.6 billion annually and men spending 4.3 billion.

3. Who spends more time online, men or women?

Again, women spend more time online because of all the distractions that catch their eye. However, men do spend quite some time online because they like to do more of a price and quality comparison of what it is that they are purchasing. Women just love to buy for themselves, their children, their spouses and for any up and coming occasion. Dinner party? New table cloth, dishes, candles, and any other décor they can think up.

4. What advantage do marketers have for women shopping online than men?

Marketers know that women don’t end any sort of purchase with just the item they were initially shopping for. Women on average spend 9.6 billion dollars annually because of all the distractions they feel are necessary to purchase. As oppose to men who spend 4.3 billion dollars annually because they get what they need and that’s it.

Week 1 EOC What I Expect

When I originally signed up for this class, I had no intentions of it being worth my while. Once I had found out who the teacher was going to be, it was then that I had realized the class wasn’t going to be just the basic principles of marketing but that we would go into some depth of it.
With this course I hope to have more than just the basic knowledge of marketing and all concepts that are related to it. I want to leave the quarter feeling confident and knowledgeable about the ins and outs of marketing research. I know it may seem like a lot to ask for but knowing Mr. Pinto and the way he teaches, I know that in the end it won’t be far from what I wanted.
However, I am not one to beat around the bush and I won’t lie when I say that I absolutely HATE doing research! Doing research for other classes and programs don’t compare to doing marketing research. In this course so far I feel like it’s more for leisure than it is for homework since its being tied in with the fashion industry. It’s more than just numbers and charts, it’s the pros and cons of a marketing campaign and the story behind why a swimsuit company decided to have the models looks like well known bombshells. Building and creating a company isn’t just about selling your own product, you also need to know how to market yourself as a company and a brand. And how exactly is that going to be accomplished? MARKETING RESEARCH DUH!

EOC My Voice

My name is Nicolle Chan; I am originally from Southern California where I lived for 16 years until I moved to Las Vegas. I am currently pursuing my goal of becoming a full time events coordinator. I have experience in planning for weddings, bridal showers, birthday parties, and even fashion shows. I was the assistant director for a balloon couture fashion show last summer and most recently I was the stage manager and model coordinator for a student fashion show held at The Art Institute of Las Vegas. All of these past experiences have prepared me for future events that I will plan to the fullest and I simply cannot wait for them to arrive on my lap. I have learned and grown from the fact that planning and creating an event is not an overnight assignment that can be fulfilled with alcohol and party streamers. It is hard work that should not be taken lightly, and I am ready for what the world has in store for me. Planning, directing, styling, creating, from the outside in it seems like my life is a whirlwind; when really my life is one big party and everyone is the guest of honor.
